I’ve been ‘thinking about thinking’ this week, and in that process, the subject of AI came up. AI, an acronym for Artificial Intelligence, refers to the capacity of “supercomputers” to direct and control themselves. To a country boy like me who was born in the BC (Before Computers) era, computers do sometimes seem like science fiction, but the “artificial” part of the AI designation obviously makes sense. It just means that there’s nothing “natural” about computers other than the humans who build them. You can’t dig microchips out of the ground and you can’t plant a handful of carbon and silicon in a pot and grow a laptop. But the fact that computers and their abilities are an artificial contrivance isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We use all kinds of devices that aren’t “natural” and find them incredibly beneficial.
Expanding the Discussion ~
As a matter of fact, I happen to have artificial joints in both hips, artificial knees in both legs, artificial lenses in both eyes, and artificial gadgets that help me hear in both ears. I praise God for every man-made device that keeps me going, and from my personal perspective, all of
them are “good”. But the computers that helped design them and the robotic machines that helped install them neither knew nor cared how I was going to assess them. All those artificial machines are morally and ethically neutral. They can be used to facilitate really, really good things or hellishly bad things, but applying the concept of “intelligence” to them takes the discussion to another level altogether.
In trying to define intelligence, dictionary writers include things like the ability to learn and to understand but those two terms have dramatically different connotations. From my perspective, claiming that computers have the ability to learn ranks them right up there with our kids’ dogs. Our daughter can say to her Australian shepherd, “Ozzie, go find my shoe,” and he will jump into gear like he’s about to do the most exciting thing he ever got to do. In a couple of minutes, he’ll be back at her feet with a shoe in his mouth. He has “learned” to go find her shoes, but he doesn’t “understand” why she wears them. He also doesn’t understand why she doesn’t like it when he sneaks them through the doggie door to enjoy some time outside.
Can’t Digitize Understanding ~
Some things can’t be reduced to ones and zeroes. The ability to compile and identify millions of data points commonly involved in human relationships doesn’t equate to understanding
what it feels like to be in one. Creating graphic images of life isn’t the same as experiencing it. No code, regardless of how complex or sophisticated it may be, can enable a machine to know that indescribable sense of joy that can be shared by two people simply because they love each other. Binary codes can’t explain the mystery, the enigma, and the dramatic power of relationships. They can create and report statistics about relationships, but they can’t “understand” why some people would sacrifice their lives to preserve them and others would kill to be free of them.
For some time, we’ve been engaged in a war for the control of the minds and hearts of the people in our country. The eternal enemy of God, and the deceitful opponent of the righteousness and justice that He loves, have engaged us in a unique kind of warfare. It’s one that descends into cruelty and violence, but the bloodshed begins with a barrage of words and ideas that are capable of mass moral and ethical destruction. The battles are waged between concepts and philosophies. Satan’s toxic belief systems are designed to undermine faith in God’s truth, to replace love with fear, and to reduce the victims to hopelessness and despair. Thoughts are powerful offensive and defensive weapons in this war, and our growing
dependence on computers to do our thinking for us will not be an asset. More and more people will be using AI in the days ahead, but we must remember that computers can lie without conscience. And apparently, so can the politicians, news reporters, self-proclaimed educators, Hollywood elites, Wall Street moguls, entertainment icons, and self-promoting religious leaders who might be using it. Knowing who to trust and what to do is getting more challenging every day. AI could also stand for Absence of Integrity, couldn’t it?
A Vital Directive ~
Given the vital importance of keeping our thinking straight as this spiritual warfare rages on, checking out an admonition in that regard given by the One who cannot lie seems appropriate. Jesus inspired the Apostle Paul to pass this directive along or times like this:
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. (2 Corinthians 10:4–6 NKJV)
One of the major problems going on when Paul wrote this epistle was the influx of self-proclaimed religious teachers infiltrating the Church with ideas and concepts that were not only false, but poisonous and spiritually lethal. The Greek word nóēma, translated thought in this passage, has to do with a mental contrivance, a device, a basis for reasoning. We could call it a concept, a philosophy, a basic way of looking at things. Paul said the counterattack against the enemy was to pull down [demolish] the devil’s mental and spiritual strongholds, to cast down his arguments [reasoning], and everything that attacks and assaults the (true) knowledge of God.
Our first challenge is to recognize these false concepts, but then we’re instructed to bring them into captivity. That prompts a few questions:
-
- What does that mean?
- How do we take an intangible idea or concept captive? And
- What is the obedience of Christ all about?
Going Beneath the Surface ~
The answer to these questions begins with addressing the last one. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were fanatical about keeping the Mosaic Law, at least on the surface. Jesus
introduced a different level of obedience and it was clear in that dissertation we call the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5,6, and 7). Again and again, Jesus said, You have heard that it has been said… and then He would follow up with, But I say… and take the commandment to a deeper level. The Law forbade adultery, for instance, but Jesus condemned even harboring the thought in your mind.
Psychologists will declare that perversions are normal, that sin is an irrelevant term, that “love” validates anything. Some “churches” will happily agree. Dismantling toxic ideas, destroying false doctrines, and pulling down entrenched perversions of God’s principles demands more than just superficial legalistic scrutiny. It demands subjecting them to an authority they cannot overcome. Examining the devil’s lies through the lens of a life committed to the level of obedience that Jesus taught, incarcerates them behind the impenetrable bars of God’s eternal truth.
We’ll be hearing a lot more about AI in the months and years ahead, but here’s another thought – God has a better way to ensure that we’re thinking straight:
Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established. (Proverbs 16:3 NKJV)

Check out Ron’s book, “Right Side Up Thinking in an Upside Down World ~ Looking at the World through the Lens of Biblical Truth”
Obedience to a loving Father should always clear our minds of mistaken ideas about the essence of life, Ron. I’ll agree that AI has given us some marvelous tools, like your joint replacements and hearing aids, but that’s just what they are – tools. And I am afraid, especially with elections around the corner, that there will be those who use AI to attempt to dupe us into believing things in our country are one way when, in reality, they are the exact opposite.
But when we are chastised by the Word, we will be less likely to fall to the devil’s schemes and be equipped to see the Truth for what it really is.
Many blessings, my friend, and let us all pray for Israel!

Huge Amen re. your insightful comments, Martha. Like you, I have no doubt that AI is going to be workng behind the scenes in more ways than we’ll probably ever know. I do love the potential to do things that we couldn’t do before, but like any tool, the potential for destructive applications are scary. I saw a guy on the news recently who was beating people with a hammer. If we can use a simple tooll like that to inflict torture and death on someone, I hate to imagine what kinds of awful things godless people will devise with AI. But, like you so wisely said, when we subject ourselves to the guidance of the Word of God and keep it as the primary authority in our lives, we’ll be far less vulnerable. God bless you, my sister. Your responses are always nourishing to my heart.

Lots of great thought reveals great truths today Mr. Ron. Why am I not surprised that both came from you sir? As I often do, I made notes while reading your insightful blog so I could capture a few of my thoughts as I was reading. You know me sir, I’m distracted easily (Squirrel?! as my head turns). 🙂 So, relying on my notes, off we go.
Yes, AI is a manmade tool, and there’s an important point there. As you so aptly pointed out, we can’t plant carbon and silicon and harvest a robot or AI-instance any more that we can plant iron and other alloys and grow a 9/16-inch combination wrench. Even if we could, they are but inanimate tools. It’s in their employment that their value is determined. AI is a tool, designed by man to be deployed/used by man to supposedly make life better, easier, improved (pick your verb). However, like man themselves, AI can be used by man for evil purposes in the same way man can be used by Satan with the same evil intent. In fact, I would argue that Satan controls some men, who in turn controls potentially helpful tools such as AI into instruments of evil.
You make a great point that learning and understanding are not synonymous. While both man and man-created AI can perform statistical analysis and determine probabilities, only man can direct the actions that can be taken from those results. Oh, we want to fool ourselves into believing that AI is capable of rationale and intelligent decision making, but like any program, it can only execute that which man has programmed it to execute. Today’s AI remains reliant upon the guidelines established by its creator(s). Sadly, Satan has convinced mankind that it no longer needs to be reliant upon the guidelines established by man’s Creator. Using AI to perform repetitive, in-depth analysis to discover trends and probabilities, and even act upon them in defined ways is a good thing. Using AI to mislead and misrepresent truth is not.
I also loved your point about how tools (be they hammers, handguns, or AI-powered programs) have no conscience. Instead, the conscience of its user is transferred upon it. Evil intent is derived by man, not machine.
Another great post sir. It points out to me that unless we remove evil from man, we have no hope of removing the potential for evil that the greatest inventions of many has. Well done my friend. God’s blessings to all in the Gallagher clan this day.

Sorry to be late getting back to you, my friend–been a bit since yesterday morning. Had some surgery (again) on Friday (nothing significant and things went well) and didn’t get up and at’m like I should have yesterday, so I’m running even slower than usual. And once again, I’m reinforced by your reaction and totally agree with your assessment re. the fact that these incredible machines are, in the final analysis, just tools. No doubt that they’re complicated beyond what a country boy like me is able to grasp, but I know that God never gave us anything beneficial that the devil didn’t co-opt for his own depraved purposes. The trained surgeon who did some work on the nerves in my arm, might also have used the training he received to mutilate a misinformed kid in ways that would prevent him or her from ever being able to have a normal life. I’m pretty sure the guy working with me would never do such a thing, but others who got the same kinds of training are actively doing it somewhere in the country every day.
The brutal sneak attack on Israel that hopefully all of us followers of Jesus have been praying about since the news broke serves as a graphic reminder that we are in a war over here as well. It weapons may not be the same, but the enemies of God in every culture share the same basic goal, whether it’s Hamas or Hezbollah over there or the anti-Christian, anti-American crowd over here, they want our presence removed, our voices silenced, and our influence forgotten. In every case, those who hate God hate those who serve Him.
Like the heartless computers I was writing about, they have no basis for conscience, so it isn’t an obstacle to any of them. Whatever theater of battle they operate in, lies are just another kind of tool to Satan’s forces to get help them get what they want and subjugate everyone to their authority. There is no right or wrong in their system, only winning or losing. Words and thoughts are little more than potential weapons for them and we see it on the news every day. Those who oppose every principle God ordained will say virtually anything if it serves their agenda and will twist every fact beyond recognition to make it appear to support their narrative. Like the serpent in the Garden, they are cunning and deceitful and whether we admit it or not, we are the ones Jesus sent to stand in their way.
As we watch another war against God’s people being waged in that land that has seen so many attacks, I feel even more encouraged than usual to know that none of us are in this alone. Thank you for continuing to stand strong and being ready to engage the enemy as long as you have life and breath. May the God who put His name in that place liberate the hostages over there and free the ones who are held captive in a different way over there. God bless you my Brother, and thanks again for your courageous stand for God’sTruth and for the encouragement you so faithfully send our way.
